Political strategist says it could take a while before ads are removed from TV stations' programming schedule.
Democratic Sen. Bob Casey's campaign said it started asking TV stations to stop its negative ads Saturday night, two days before Republican challenger Dave McCormick proposed that the campaigns stop negative ads following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in Butler County on Saturday.
Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick’s proposal to Sen. Bob Casey to halt negative advertising fizzled Monday with Casey’s campaign saying it had started doing that Saturday night.Monday morning that “in light of the assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler,” he was proposing the negative ad truce. “This is a time to come together as Americans to recognize that what makes our country and its people exceptional transcends party,” he wrote. “Let’s take some time to put aside the negativity.” However, the Casey campaign said it reached out to TV stations just hours after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his rally in Butler County. “On Saturday evening after the shooting, the Casey campaign worked with stations to stop advertising temporarily,” said Maddy McDaniel, spokesperson for the campaign. “The campaign will work to resume communication with voters in the days ahead to educate Pennsylvanians on Senator Casey’s record, his opponent’s record and the stakes of this Senate race.” McCormick’s campaign responded by noting that Casey’s ads attacking McCormick ran early Monday morning on CBS Philadelphia while another ran during the noon news broadcast on KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. The McCormick campaign did not address a question from PennLive about still-active Facebook ads in which the Republican talks about his and Casey’s views on abortion, or if McCormick had asked political-action committees supporting him to also halt their anti-Casey ads. Mike Mikus, a Democratic strategist near Pittsburgh, said halting TV ads is a cumbersome process made worse by the Trump shooting happening on a weekend when TV stations’ business offices are closed. Campaign staff must talk to station officials and advertising directors and then the directive must reach programming directors to be implemented. “Typically, it will take a whole business day for the ads to come down if all this transpires on a weekday,” said Mikus. “It takes time for it to get done.” With dozens of stations spread across Pennsylvania, Mikus said some ads might still be popping up on TV screens. “It wouldn’t be shocking if there’s a couple of stations where they’re still running,” he said. “It’s just the way it is.
