The shooting at Trump’s campaign rally Saturday could inflame the politics of 2024.

Former president Donald Trump raises his arm with blood on his face after a gunshot grazed his ear at a campaign rally Saturday in Butler, Pa. MILWAUKEE — One response to the horrific shooting at former president Donald Trump’s Saturday campaign rally was both universal and predictable. Across the political spectrum, leaders rushed to say that violence should have no place in the political life of the country.

For many Americans, the stakes of this election are enormous, talked about in existential terms on both sides of the political divide. To those on the left, there is no greater symbol of the dangers of another Trump presidency than the Jan. 6 attack, when protesters broke doors and windows, trashed offices and chanted “Hang Mike Pence,” referring to the vice president at the time. That day alone is etched in memories as indicative of Trump’s authoritarian instincts, such as attempting to subvert the results of the 2020 election and denying that President Biden was legitimately elected.

In 2017, a gunman opened fire on a baseball field in suburban Washington as Republican lawmakers were practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise was badly wounded, one of six that day who were hurt. There was the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, and in October 2022, Paul Pelosi, the husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi , who was then the speaker of the House, was attacked in their San Francisco home and beaten with a hammer.
