Deputies arrested Jacob Scott, Kilion Bell, and Larry White this past week. White was arrested Wednesday morning.
Mobile County's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force formed last year. FOX10 takes a look at what the unit is doing to protect our youth.led to the triple arrests. The team, formed under Sheriff Paul Burch in February 2023, is one of 61 task forces nationwide.
“Nobody works in this unit that doesn’t really want to be here because it’s some difficult work and we have to look at some awful stuff,” said Cpl. Sheffield.“These are cybercrimes. They’re very technical to investigate. They take a long period of time- a lot of legal process is sent, a lot of foot work involved in it,” he explained.“A cyber tip is some information we receive from the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children. They send us the information and it’s usually just a tip- minimal information on the front end, we usually have to follow up with some subpoenas, some warrants, some open-source investigations to identify our suspect,” he said. Cpl. Sheffield says, historically, white, middle-aged men are the most common offenders for this type of crime. However, he says that’s changing. “We’re seeing a shift from that- recently, just with the internet and everybody of any age is accessing the internet- child sex abuse material is becoming more prevalent,” he added.“We pushed 106 felonies through the District Attorney’s office, and 33 individual federal indictments resulted from our local investigations,” he said. Breighanna Vigor is the Founder of Stopping Traffick, a local nonprofit organization. As a young girl, she was nearly trafficked by an online predator. She says it’s reassuring to know the ICAC is doing what it promised. “The number one step is making sure we have law enforcement officers who have the training to ensure these predators are off the street,” she said. “Once our community members know the warning signs and how to report it, we need to make sure investigators and detectives know what to do when that report comes in. I’m super thankful for the ICAC department.” Jacob Scott has since been released from Metro Jail after posting bond. Kilion Bell is in jail on no bond. The DA’s office says he’s on probation for another charge which played a factor in the judge denying him bond Wednesday morning. Larry White remains in jail and his bond hearing is set for Friday.Woman charged with beheading man with chainsaw3 die in Mount Vernon crash on Labor DayMCSO’s ICAC unit continues full speed ahead with 36 investigationsUniversity of South Alabama has new mental health programs to support students
