Custom image of Absolute Green Arrow and Batman.
Between its highly successful Absolute universe and burgeoning Next Level initiative , DC is on a roll. In particular, the Absolute continuity of runs has absolutely skyrocketed in popularity, and that’s likely for several reasons, including how new-reader-friendly it is and how unfathomably radical its reinterpretations of iconic DC characters can be.
If you thought Absolute Batman’s villains or Absolute Superman’s Kal-El was ludicrous and drastic, for instance, then you need to brace yourself for Absolute Green Arrow’s enigmatic serial killer. Likewise, Absolute Green Arrow is giving us what is arguably one of the best redesigns for Dinah Lance’s Black Canary in ages. Absolute Black Canary is Here Whoever this serial killer is, they are certainly the focal point of Absolute Green Arrow, even if Dinah is the lead protagonist investigating them and the alleged murder of Oliver Queen. Indeed, this character’s mystique and haunting Batman: Mask of the Phantasm-esque aesthetic is marvelous, and this killer wielding a bow made out of machetes is wonderfully obscene. Absolute Green Arrow is a six-issue limited series, not an ongoing, and thus it won’t be long until readers deduce or learn who this “Absolute Hunter” is, much less why they’re “slaughtering corrupt billionaires” in this “urban horror murder-mystery.” This, coupled with Oliver supposedly being killed, should allow Dinah to be the book’s true star, and a neat redesign has been cooked up for her. “Without the trick arrows... without the money... without mercy, what’s left is the Absolute Hunter! A serial killer is slaughtering corrupt billionaires, and the only clue to his identity is the green arrows protruding from the victims’ bodies. Executive protection specialist Dinah Lance, also known as Absolute Black Canary, is assigned to uncover the murderer’s identity as she investigates a list of suspects drawn from the ranks of DC’s most dangerous archers. Each one is uniquely connected to a recently murdered Oliver Queen. A deadly mystery unfolds in this urban horror reimagining of the Emerald Archer’s mythos, brought to life by Eisner Award–winners Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque.” Overall, Dinah is not too dissimilar from her classic counterpart in terms of her aesthetic and what she’s wearing, though Absolute Black Canary appears to boast an exceptional muscle mass and wears her hair in a chic undercut. Her wardrobe seems to be a collection of the same grunge-inspired attire, with fishnets now worn on her arms instead of her legs, and she’s likely to wear fewer leather jackets if she’s aggressively bearing bare arms. Her Redesign is Outstanding It’s almost unfortunate that this Black Canary look could become iconic in the Absolute universe, however, because it would be a fantastic look for her in the mainline continuity. Of course, while it isn’t nearly the star of the miniseries, Absolute Black Canary’s look can distinguish this iteration of the character apart from the one readers and fans are already familiar with. Characters should always be granted permission to develop and evolve, especially beyond the superficial means of costume design, yet it’s clear that DC Elseworlds and alternate universes are being leveraged nowadays in order to achieve that instead. If we’re lucky, maybe we will see Absolute Green Arrow either burst into an ongoing run or mutate into an Absolute Black Canary ongoing. The former would only make sense if someone who goes by the name Green Arrow becomes the lead protagonist, though, and it’d be rather presumptuous, let alone disappointing, if Oliver Queen was revealed to not actually be dead . The latter would be the logical choice, as she’s technically already the main character in Absolute Green Arrow, but sadly not its titular DC star. Either way, this redesign for Black Canary is superb, and it’ll be a crying shame if we don’t get to see more of it.
