Essendon fans have reacted savagely after it was revealed the AFL club is considering changing its Bombers logo. 7NEWS
The club has conducted a research project and is considering feedback from multiple stakeholders, including members. It is unlikely that the club will dump the use of the term Bombers as that features in the club song. Essendon also have a link to aviation with their headquarters based at Tullamarine near the airport, and their training ground is called ‘the Hangar’. Essendon Airport is also nearby.
“Have we got to that point that such a great logo, a tradition of the Essendon Football Club because it might upset the odd person or two that we would lose something so special with our football club.It has also been reported that the colours of the logo could change, but that would only be a subtle a make-over. And the red sash is also on the jumper is also under investigation.
The Essendon team is on track to play finals this year, but supporters are restless with the club’s lack of finals success over the past 20 years. The Bombers have not won a final since 2004.The club was also punished for its controversial ‘supplements’ program which saw them booted out of the finals in 2013 and the players were later suspended for a year.
Then club captain Jobe Watson handed in his 2012 Brownlow Medal in the fallout, which was later passed on to Trent Cotchin and Sam Mitchell.“The plane logo and our nickname are intertwined. If we’re worried about the logo being offensive then being the called the ‘Bombers’ must be too,” one fan wrote.
Another said: “The Bombers name and logo wasn’t deemed offensive when they ran out in the 2001 grand final not two weeks after the events of 9/11, yet apparently it’s offensive now. My this world’s gone soft.”“As a lifelong Essendon fan I say bravo! This is long overdue and the change will be welcomed by many!!” one fan said on Twitter.
