Hawks skipper James Sicily has failed to overturn his three-match suspension for a dangerous tackle, after it was upheld by the AFL’s appeal board on Monday night.
The decision came as the league insisted there is no confusion over tackling. However, St Kilda forward Dan Butler said players were still trying to adjust to the required technique “in the heat of battle” to avoid inflicting head knocks.
Houghton argued Sicily or Hawthorn’s expert witness were not asked questions that became central to the tribunal’s decision, and that the tribunal did not consider evidence from the expert witness. “The video is ambiguous. It doesn’t tell you one way or another that Sicily was pulling on that arm, or not.”Match review officer Michael Christian cited another dangerous tackle on Monday, offering Carlton’s Matthew Cottrell a one-match suspension for rough conduct against his Gold Coast opponent Ben Long. Cottrell tackled Long front on with his arms over his shoulders, heaving him into the ground.
However, incoming AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon insists players know how to tackle properly, and says match review officer and tribunal penalties for dangerous tackles are clear despite varying suspensions of one to three weeks and, in three cases, including Butler’s, a successful challenge.“I don’t really see there being confusion.
Butler, also a Richmond premiership player, said it was important umpires blew the whistle as quickly as possible when making a call. Saints assistant coach and club great Robert Harvey, a dual Brownlow medallist and a tough tackler in his day, said all coaches wanted was consistent adjudication by umpires and league head office.
