The lives of 17 people who were killed in recent years by law enforcement in San Antonio will be remembered this Saturday in Milam Park.
Deborah Bush, the aunt of Marquise Jones, encourages people to keep fighting for racial justice and police reform during a protest in summer 2020 following the death of George Floyd.The memorial and protest from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. is one of dozens of events taking place across the U.S. this weekend as part of thein 2014, stated in a news release.
At the event, “surviving family members will speak to share their continued struggle in the fight for justice, as well as share how they want their loved ones to be remembered, shedding the truth on these dear community members who have had their character destroyed by both media and law enforcement alike,” the release states.
Jones, a 23-year-old Black man, was shot by off-duty SAPD officer Robert Encina, who was working security at a drive-thru restaurant, in 2014. Encina said Jones was carrying a gun as he ran from the scene of a fender-bender near the restaurant drive-thru. Encina also said Jones was turning to face him when he shot Jones in the back. Police found a revolver about 20 feet from Jones’ body, according to court documents. Neither Jones’
In 2021, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales closed a review of Jones’ case and declined to present a case against Encina to a grand jury. The family also lost a wrongful death civil suit against the off-duty officer, who kept his job.
