OAKLEY — A 5-year-old boy was expected to recover fully after being shot Sunday night by his father in what authorities said appears to be an accident. The young boy underwent surgery following the shooting after being airlifted to a hospital and has a healthy prognosis for the future, according to a statement from from city of Oakley Assistant City Manager and spokesperson Danielle Navarro.
Police arrived to the home in the 1700 block of Hemlock Court to find the boy’s father holding him and applying direct pressure to the wound, she said.DA clears relative who killed rapper Lil Toro in East Bay confrontation Police were called to the residence about 9:25 p.m. and were there in three minutes. Initially, it was reported that a man cleaning his guns accidentally shot himself but was later amended to note that it was the boy who had been shot. Navarro said the boy’s father cooperated with detectives and told them he had been cleaning his guns when he reached into the gun case for an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. In doing so, he pulled the trigger accidentally, Navarro said. She added that police do not believe there was any intent behind the shooting but that they will submit an investigation to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. In the statement, Oakey Police Chief Paul Beard called the shooting a “tragic event” and called the wound a “grazing wound and not a penetrating wound.” He also said that but for an inch, the boy may have been injured worse, perhaps fatally. The bullet hit the boy at close range in the torso. “Even a graze . . . from a rifle-fired bullet can cause devastating injuries,” Beard said. “We are very thankful the injuries sustained by the boy are not worse than they are; an inch of difference of where the bullet struck the boy would have been a different and more tragic outcome.” According to Navarro, the boy’s father believed the rifle was empty of bullets. She added that police executed a search warrant upon the residence and removed all the guns along with other evidence. “Even though we believe this to be an awful accident, some crucial errors of negligence were made,” Beard said. “Firearms should always be treated as if they are loaded, and one should never put a finger on the trigger of a firearm unless there is intent to shoot it.” Beard said investigators will delve into those elements before submitting the investigation to the district attorney’s office. “For now, we are grateful our your resident will make a recovery,” Beard said. “And we wish him well moving forward.”Newsom issues 'final warning' to cities over housing law violations — only one is in the Bay AreaWhat stood out in Tony Vitello's first series as SF Giants' manager?Dear Abby: The bride admitted to me that the wedding was a shamMiss Manners: They won't even set a menu until the guests arrive
