After profits skyrocketed during the pandemic, Academy Sports + Outdoors announced it...

Katy-based Academy Sports and Outdoors is funneling its pandemic profits into 80 to 100 new stores by 2026, starting with Lafayette, Ind., a region of more than 200,000 residents that includes Purdue University.

The desire to get out and stay fit during the pandemic helped Academy rake in record profits over the past few years, which have begun to return to typical levels in recent quarters. In 2022, the outdoors and recreation retailer opened nine stores while publicizing plans to open dozens more over the next few years. The store in Lafayette, which neighbors the main campus of Purdue and its 41,000 students in West Lafayette, will open this spring, the company said.

"We're excited to be a new destination for the Lafayette community to find everything they need to pursue their sports and outdoors passions," Sam Johnson, Academy's executive vice president of retail operations, said in a statement.
