We tried five local restaurants whose minimalist menus focus on the one food item they do best
Last week I got an email from a locally-owned taqueria chain whose owners claim their rolled tacos are the best in San Diego. As a fan of rolled tacos, I decided to put their claim to the test and visited the newly opened Mission Valley outlet of El Tianguis. Did their taquitos live up to the hype? More on that later. The visit got me thinking about other San Diego-based restaurants like El Tianguis, who have built their menus entirely around one item.
Chick Main's menu is essentially just battered and fried-to-order chicken tenders that are doused with the diners' choice of spice level — from naked to supreme. The tenders are served alone, in a bun or with seasoned crinkle-cut fries. A hot chicken sandwich, served on a slider-size bun with pickles, cabbage and a light honey drizzle, is $6 and a good size piece of chicken. With a super-size side of fries for $5 it's a more-than-filling and satisfying meal.
