Exploring how Venus turned from habitable to hellscape could help us better understand our own planet, and also narrow the search for alien life.

Simulations show how Venus turned from habitable to hellscape, and they could also help us narrow the search for alien life.

In a bid to better understand how planets could transform so dramatically, a team of scientists from the University of Geneva , with support from the CNRS laboratories of Paris and Bordeaux, simulated the entire runaway greenhouse process that can transform a habitable planet into an arid wasteland. As such, “it would not be accurate to study climate change with one of these generic models,” especially as “the IPCC studies changes of a few degrees while here we’re talking a few tens of degrees.”

One of the only images ever captured from the surface of Venus, taken by the Soviet Union’s Venera 13 mission. Those conditions are hostile not only to life, but also to machinery. The Soviet Venera 7 mission was the first to land on Venus on December 15, 1970. Within an hour, the spacecraft’s systems were fried by the intense heat and surface pressure. If the same runaway greenhouse process were to occur on Earth, it would make our planet unlivable.
