The apple category in Australia has found the going tough amid fierce competition from other snacking foods. Two decades ago, apple consumption was about 16 kg per person in a year, the Department of Agriculture said. That has fallen to 8.3 kg per person in the 12 months to the end of June 2022, according to the industry body, Apple and Pear Australia.
The Cosmic Crisp is a blend between the Honeycrisp and Enterprise varieties and took Washington State University more than 20 years to develop. Red Rich Fruits obtained the rights to the variety in 2019 for the Australian market. There will be 560,000 Cosmic Crisp apple trees planted across the Red Rich stable of growers.Red Rich Fruits, a grower, packer, wholesaler and marketer of products including pears, stone fruits and mangoes, generates annual revenues of about $150 million.
Cosmic Crisp trees have been planted by 13 growers who are part of Red Rich Fruits in the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Batlow in NSW and Manjimup in Western Australia.
