After watching his parents endure Alzheimer’s disease, hotelier Laurence Geller began building 5-star care residences and plowing funding into dementia care research and nurse training

Of all the conditions that characterize the vulnerability of growing older, Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia are the most intractable and devastating. That’s true not only for affected individuals but also for those relatives who surround and care for them. This cognitive disability remains a black box, in which we can scarcely imagine the confusion and dislocation that accompany a withering brain and failing body.

Geller had opportunity, means and motive to make a change. He has a passion to address what he calls the “pandemic” of Alzheimer’s, a word that groups such as thein the U.S. agree applies in a country where 6 million people have Alzheimer’s.

Buoyed by the positive reception to Chelsea Court, Geller and his team have already locked down three other Central London properties and attracted an investor, U.K. real estate fund manager Frogmore. Along with a regularly scheduled refresh of Chelsea Court, they expect to have another roughly 100 beds open by year-end 2020, and have branded their company Loveday & Co. The next tranche of four to six locations could also include spots in Manchester and Edinburgh.
