The nation's most ambitious infrastructure project is falling apart.

Governor Gavin Newsom blasted the decision in a statement, saying it’s “political retribution” for the state’s opposition to Trump’s policies, such as the plan to declare a national emergency to fund a border wall. “This is California’s money, appropriated by Congress, and we will vigorously defend it in court,” Newsom added.

But he remained hopeful officials would come up with a solution before those federal funds are needed.: China, Japan, Spain, France and South Korea already have sprawling high speed rail systems.: California’s high speed rail has been beset with delays and swelling costs since the project got off the ground in 2008.
