Michael Hooper and James Slipper have been named Wallabies co-captains in a 34-man squad for the Rugby Championship that saw coach Eddie Jones select eight uncapped players and five offshore stars - but omit several high-profile players.
After watching a full Super Rugby season, and holding several weeks of camps, Jones showed his hand for the Rugby World Cup for the first time and the form of several uncapped rookies was enough to warrant selection in a squad for the first two Rugby Championship games, against South Africa in Pretoria and Argentina in Sydney .
France-based lock Richie Arnold was named for the first time as one of five “Giteau Law” selections. Jones sought approval for extra selections above the allowed three picks per series, as per the Rugby Australia guidelines, and was given the green light for Arnold and Quade Cooper. One of the biggest omissions was another Japan-based no.10 Bernard Foley, who was the starting five-eighth for the Wallabies the last six Tests in 2022.
Several Wallabies regulars of recent years also missed out, including Caderyn Neville, Harry Wilson, James O’Connor, Jake Gordon, Lachlan Lonergan, Hunter Paisami, Ned Hanigan and James O’Connor. They were included in a 28-man train-on squad.
