Lily Foster battled addiction for 20 years and 'lost' everything. She wants to share her 'lived experience' so others can benefit but in Tasmania, it's not easy for her to make her voice heard.
"It's about being included and contributing to policy that is based on harm reduction. It's empathetic, and ultimately focused on the needs of the client," Ms Foster said.
Tasmania is the only state or territory that does not have an independent organisation, run by people with lived experience, to help government develop harm reduction strategies."At the moment the majority of our services are faith or charitable-based services and that can be a barrier to people entering or engaging with those services," she said.
"People aren't accessing help or support because they're genuinely afraid of the reality that 'being a drug user is a crime'.There's been a long-term push for the Tasmanian government to fund an independent "'peer-led" advisory body.
