GREELEY – Senior tight end Max Pierce wiped tears from his eyes after the University of Northern Colorado’s win over Northern Arizona on Saturday.
The Bears trailed the Lumberjacks by a touchdown with less than a minute to go. Pierce dropped a potential touchdown pass on the Bears’ final offensive drive, his frustration obvious. Quarterback Dylan McCaffrey, however, completed a 15-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Ty Arrington with 25 seconds left to make it 20-19. UNC went for two on the conversion and McCaffrey tossed the ball to Pierce, who leaned over the goal line for a 21-20 lead. UNC’s sideline and fans went wild.
“Right after you drop a pass, some things are going through my head about myself I can’t really repeat. I knew there would be the ball coming to me later on in the drive,” Pierce said. “I can’t be selfish and worry about the play I just missed. There’s gonna be another one coming my way. I just had to make the next one.”On defense, sophomore linebackers Tama Tuitele and Elijah Anderson-Taylor both had huge days.
“It certainly wasn’t perfect, but that was a team win. Offense, defense, special teams, everyone chipped in,” UNC coach Ed McCaffrey said. “I loved our energy on the sideline. The guys took it upon themselves to make a lot of noise. That was the most fun game I’ve coached in a long, long time.”
