The free-agent signings have come and gone for the Jaguars' pass rush, but steady Dawuane Smoot continues to make big plays on defense.
Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell said Smoot leaves the vocal leadership to teammates such as Key and Allen and leads more by example.
Smoot is combining his size and speed with the biggest assortment of moves among the pass-rushers on the team. But like anyone, he wants more playing time and admits the current rotation is not always easy to accept. "His versatility really speaks for itself," Caldwell said."He can play inside, outside can drop into coverage, rush the quarterback ... he does so many things for us we have to get him on the field and let him go. In certain situations, we're going to get him more reps. He's performing well, doing a great job and motivating the other guys."Smoot also will never stop working, a trait he learned from his father Darrell when growing up in Ohio.
Smoot is getting a quarterback pressure or sack every 11.7 snaps and 83 percent of his sacks are"drive-killers" — such as last week when both of his sacks came on third down. But he's also loyal to a fault and his family is rooted in Jacksonville. Smoot spends a good deal of his practice time coaching up his teammates — who lovingly call him"Big Smoot" — and holding court in the corner of the locker room where the defensive linemen have their lockers.Smoot has varied interestsHe has honed his body and mind through the use of martial arts at Combatives Unlimited in Mandarin since 2019 and has his own channel on YouTube.
