Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar is convening lawmakers to form a working group he hopes will change the Democratic message on border and immigration.
SAN ANTONIO — Rep. Henry Cuellar is launching a new Democratic working group in Congress after the recent failure to pass bipartisan border security legislation in an attempt to revive the debate around immigration reform.Cuellar, who represents a district straddling the Rio Grande in South Texas, has been critical of the Biden administration’s immigration policy and is known for his antiabortion stance and past support for some of President Donald Trump’s policies.
The task force aims to eventually propose legislation and pressure both parties to resolve the issue. But for now any border bill faces an uphill battle. Cuellar said neither party has had a rational conversation yet. He is hoping to capture Democrats’ attention long enough to hear the arguments he has been making from the border for decades. Too few in Washington understood the realities and strains of managing an influx of asylum seekers and migrants, he said, but all that has changed.“Governor Abbott played this very well politically,” Cuellar said, referring to the Texas Republican’s efforts to bus thousands of migrants to major cities.
