But revisiting the series more than two decades after its premiere, no character is recontextualized more dramatically than John Locke . At first glance, Lost frames Locke as something close to a miracle — a man who embraces the Island with near-religious conviction, convinced he has been chosen for a higher purpose. But when you rewatch Lost, Locke’s story feels far more devastating. John Locke's Past Reveals a Lifetime of Tragedy on 'Lost' One of the most powerful twists in Lost’s early seasons arrives in the Season 1 episode “Walkabout,” when we learn that John Locke had been paralyzed before the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. The reveal completely reframes everything audiences thought they understood about him during the show’s opening episodes. What initially looks like a confident survivalist who will be an immediate asset to the other castaways suddenly becomes something far more emotional: a man experiencing what feels like a miracle. Knowing that context makes earlier moments in the pilot land very differently on a rewatch. When Locke looks down at his legs and slowly wiggles his toes, it’s a life-changing realization. Off the Island, Locke, now going by the alias Jeremy Bentham, tries unsuccessfully to convince the Oceanic Six to return. After failing, he falls into despair, only to be murdered by Ben Linus just as he begins to reconsider his fate. By the time the full scope of his story becomes clear, it’s obvious that the destiny Locke believed in was never truly his.
