Some Texas lawmakers have signaled an appetite to tackle the state's housing affordability crisis when they convene next year.

Homeownership in Houston and Harris County is going from historically affordable to out of reach for so many people, according to a new report.

"To have nine out of 10 Texans agree on anything is really tough," said Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University and a senior research fellow at the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston. "I think what that says is that at the very highest level, housing affordability is an issue that transcends partisan politics."

Pollsters with the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston and the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University surveyed more than 2,200 Texas adults in English and Spanish. While there's broad consensus that housing affordability is a problem for Texans, some think it's more of a problem than others.

Acknowledgement of the state's housing affordability woes crosses partisan lines with 88% of Democrats, 80% of Republicans and 72% of independents agreeing that housing costs are at least somewhat of a problem where they live.
