Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., lambasted the Biden administration Thursday after it announced plans to allow construction of a southern border wall.“The Biden administration was not required to expand construction of the border wall – and they certainly were not required to waive several environmental laws to expedite the building,” she said. “The President needs to take responsibility for this decision and reverse course.”“A wall does nothing to deter people who are fleeing poverty and violence from coming to the United States,” she said. “You do not risk you life or your children's lives going through the Darien Gap or traversing hundreds of miles of desert if you have any other options. Walls only serve to push migrants into more remote areas, increasing their chances of death. It is a cruel policy.” The representative closed her statement demanding that the White House examine the causes of immigration and “stop contributing to the destabilization that drives migration.” Commenters on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, poked fun at the Democrat, who has previously supported the president. “Low hanging fruit. Your [sic] like the person who volunteers to do the dishes after dinner even though it was paper plates and pizza,” anothera belief that the wall would not work, its construction will proceed after his administration waived 26 federal laws Wednesday. Biden previously said in 2020 that “there will not be another foot of wall constructed in my administration.”Mexico Thursday, the first leg in a trip to several major countries from which many migrants are originating.
