In the ‘2025 World Museum Visitor Survey’ released by the art media outlet Artnewspaper on the 31st of last month, the National Museum of Korea recorded 6,507,483 visitors last year, placing third after the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and the Vatican Museums . Fourth was the British Museum , and fifth was the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, United States . Artnewspaper stated, “The most striking growth was seen in Korea,” adding, “The National Museum of Korea surged from 3.8 million in 2024 to 6.5 million last year, an increase of more than 70%, and in terms of absolute growth it ranks among the notable cases we observed.” In its 2024 visitor survey, the National Museum of Korea ranked eighth in annual visitors. In addition to the National Museum of Korea, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul ranked 35th; Gyeongju National Museum ranked 39th; Buyeo National Museum ranked 78th; and Gongju National Museum ranked 89th. Artnewspaper assessed that “global enthusiasm for Korean culture is leading to museum visits by both domestic and international audiences.” Yoo Hong-jun, director of the National Museum of Korea, said, “Amid the spread of K-culture, it is a meaningful outcome that interest in Korean traditional culture and cultural heritage, the roots of that culture, has led to museum visits.” The museum evaluated the results as “a combination of exhibition planning that spans permanent and special exhibitions, expansion of the visitor experience through exhibition innovation, and the activation of cultural events and cultural products.”
