Singer and producer Park Jin-young said he accepted the position of chairperson of the Presidential Committee on Cultural Exchange because he wanted to “do something for the K-pop industry that cannot be done at a company level.

” Appearing on MBC’s entertainment program “Radio Star” on November 5, Park said he took the post “after turning it down several times.” He also said he chose to appear on the show instead of keeping an appointment with President Lee Jae-myung. “When the president can’t make a schedule, it’s usually because of something like a National Strategy Meeting. For me, it was ‘Radio Star,’” he joked. Although Park currently serves as a part-time chair, he said the government initially offered him a full-time position. “At first, they asked me to work full-time, but I refused for three months,” he said. “Each time I declined, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik found a way to address my concerns, and eventually, I ran out of reasons to refuse.” He explained that he chose not to accept a full-time post because of the pressure it would entail. “A full-time position would mean getting paid, but it felt too burdensome. I still have to perform as a singer and appear on shows like ‘Radio Star.’ How could I handle it all?” he said, adding that he also declined the offer of minister-level privileges. Park admitted that he was also uneasy about the potential for political misunderstanding. “I was worried people might misinterpret my political stance. If it were just me, that’d be fine, but my company and family are also involved,” he said. “I haven’t revealed my political views in 30 years, but since some people are concerned, I might as well say it, within one minute.” He continued, “Capitalism, when left unchecked, favors the wealthy. That’s why progressive policies are needed to allow the government to protect ordinary people. But if the protection goes too far compared to other countries, capitalists will simply move their money elsewhere. That’s why conservative policies are also necessary.” Park concluded, “Looking at the times and other countries, I believe balance is essential. I don’t intend to belong to any political camp. I’m neither progressive nor conservative. I’m just Park Jin-young.”
