A soldier holding a gun in Sicario
Taylor Sheridan has become one of the biggest names in Hollywood over the last eight years thanks to the continued success of Yellowstone and his other shows on Paramount+. But before he took over the small screen, he was an instrumental creative behind the Sicario franchise.
He wrote 2015's Sicario and 2018's sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which were helmed by Denis Villeneuve and Stefano Sollima, respectively. Both films star Benicio del Toro's assassin Alejandro Gillick and Josh Brolin's government agent Matt Graver, with Emily Blunt also headlining the first film. Each movie follows conflicts between the Mexican cartels and America's intelligence agencies. The intense stories, thrilling action, and incredibly complex characters are key reasons why the Sicario movies have gained a passionate following over the last eight-plus years. But the story was not properly resolved, as Sheridan has left audiences waiting for nearly a decade to get a conclusion. Sicario: Day Of The Soldado Wasn't Meant To Be Where Taylor Sheridan's Franchise Ended One of the biggest issues with the Sicario duology as it currently stands is that the promised next chapter has yet to come. Even before Day of the Soldado came out, there were plans in motion for more. Producer Trent Luckinbill told ScreenRant back in 2018 that Sicario 3 was "absolutely" going to happen. The expectation from Luckinbill and others that a third film would happen is evident with how Sheridan ended the second installment. Sicario: Day of the Soldado's ending shows Alejandro recruiting an apprentice and Matt questioning his decision to save Isabel Reyes . Its ending is meant to tease Sicario 3, not wrap up the crime thriller franchise. But so far, that is what it has become. Sicario 3 has not already come out, nor is a release imminent. The second part has become the conclusion to Alejandro and Matt's story for the time being. This would be an unsatisfying place to leave the franchise, which is why calls for Sicario 3 persist all these years later. For that reason, Sheridan should look to prioritize delivering the franchise finale that's eluded audiences for nearly a decade. He's made sure to give his various TV shows proper conclusions, so Sicario deserves the same treatment. Day of the Soldado can't be where this story ends. Why Sicario 3 Hasn't Happened Yet The lack of a completed screenplay is one of the main reasons Sicario 3 has struggled to get going. For his part, Sheridan has not spoken about the state of the movie's development or script. It is known he had an idea in mind for the story as far back as 2018, so the direction of the franchise is clear. The core concept of Sicario 3 is bringing Alejandro and Matt back together with Blunt's Kate Macer. Luckinbill and fellow producer Molly Smith indicated in 2023 that Sheridan was involved in some capacity with the development and that the script was nearly finished. However, Blunt and Brolin remained unsure if it would happen the following year. Subscribe for exclusive Sicario 3 insights in our newsletter Want deeper clarity on Sicario 3? Without a finished script, there is no director confirmed for Sicario 3, and thus no production timeline. If Sheridan is directly responsible for writing the screenplay, then his commitments to his wildly popular TV shows may be what's really holding up this sequel. As frustrating as it has been to wait for the third Sicario, hope of it being made has not completely died. Brolin said Sicario 3 was "very, very real" in 2025, implying that we could be getting very close to major updates coming. With Brolin, Blunt, and del Toro remaining popular actors and Sheridan's rise through Hollywood, there should still be plenty of interest from the studio side to make Sicario 3. It should be a matter of when, not if, Sicario gets the ending it's been waiting for. Sheridan may just need to use his popularity to help push it over the finish line.
