EIGHT YEARS OLD. EIGHT YEAR OLD MALCOLM MCINTYRE IS ON THE MOVE. HE POWERS HIS WAY INTO THE NORTHEAST YMCA TO HIS HAPPY PLACE. THE WATER. NEAR THE POOL IS WHERE MALCOLM FEELS THE MOST COMFORTABLE. IT’S REALLY INTERACTIVE AND YOU GET TO GET YOU HAVE EXERCISE WISE AND YOU DON’T. YOU CAN DO A LOT OF THINGS IN THERE. I WOULD SAY THE WATER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A GREAT EQUALIZER FOR HIM. YOU KNOW, WE ALL FLOAT IN THE WATER, LEGS DANGLE DOWN BELOW YOU AND YOU’RE ALL AT THE SAME LEVEL THAT THE POOL LINE.

Malcolm started para-swimming when he was 4 and, in a year, had learned all four strokes from Gwena Herman, the coach of the Bennett Blazers. The Blazers are based in Baltimore, Maryland.When Malcolm was 14 months old, doctors discovered a tumor on his spine.
