Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Gran Turismo's story follows Jann Mardenborough's rise from being one of the best racers on the simulator to becoming a professional motorsport driver.
The real-life account of Jann getting into GT Academy is a bit more complicated. Jann had six weeks to post a great time on an assigned track and climb the lap rankings to make the cut. It took Jann until the last night of qualifications to post his best time . He then moved on to additional rounds of qualifying before officially earning a spot in GT Academy. Gran Turismo speeds up the entire process to help move the story along and make Jann's admittance to GT Academy a bit more thrilling.
5 Gran Turismo Gives Jann Mardenborough A New Mentor Jann Mardenborough's life in Gran Turismo also changes since the movie gives him a new mentor. David Harbour's Jack Salter takes the role of leading Jann through training and pushing him to be the best racer possible, as Jann turns him from a skeptic into a believer. There is no Jack Salter in real life, though. Gran Turismo's lead had a few different mentors in real life, such as Gavin Gough and Ricardo Divila.
