A 79-year-old man was fatally shot by NYPD officers after he allegedly approached a Queens precinct while brandishing a firearm. Police say the man refused to drop his weapon despite repeated commands from officers.
A 79-year-old man was critically wounded in a Queens police shooting outside a precinct on Tuesday night. Police say the man allegedly walked up to the NYPD stationhouse while brandishing a gun. The incident occurred at the 111th Precinct headquarters at 45-06 215th St. in Bayside at around 6:40 p.m. on February 18th. According to NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, the man left his vehicle and approached officers, pointing a firearm at them during the conversation.
Officers repeatedly issued verbal commands for the man to drop his weapon, but he refused to comply. After de-escalation techniques proved unsuccessful, four officers discharged their firearms, striking the man. The senior was rushed to NewYork Presbyterian-Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officers involved, though unharmed, were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. A loaded Cobra .38 special firearm was recovered at the scene. Sources familiar with the suspect report that he only had one prior arrest dating back to the early 1980s. NYPD officials are investigating the possibility that the man may have intended to end his life through the shooting. Chief Rivera stated that it is too early to definitively conclude this, but it is a line of inquiry they are pursuing. This incident marks the second police-involved shooting on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a police detective was shot while attempting to serve a search warrant on the Lower East Side. In that case, the suspect, a repeat offender on parole, was also wounded.
