A group of young children, including the 2-year-old boy, was in the park when the suspect attacked, according to the police department. The passerby was attacked when he tried to intervene, the agency noted. He suffered severe injuries and died at the scene, the press release says. Police had learned about the suspect several times in the past, the agency noted. He had a history of mental illness, which became apparent during the execution of a search warrant at his home, the press release says.
