WESTLAKE, Ohio - A 78-year-old woman was scammed out of almost $200,000 worth of gold after calling a bogus number for “Apple Security.” Westlake police said the woman’s ordeal began in August 2025, when she called the bogus “Apple Security” number that popped up in a red box on her home computer saying she had been “hacked.
” The scammer who answered the phone claimed to be an FBI agent and began an elaborate story that led the woman to believe she was legally obligated to participate in a federal investigation.Eventually the woman was ordered to withdraw large sums of cash from her account and buy gold coins and gold bars. Apparently, the woman told the financial institution she needed the money for a home remodeling project. The fake agents showed up at her house to collect the gold and she was promised the gold would be returned when the investigation was completed. The victim went to Carat Coin in North Olmsted to get more gold and the business owner was able to convince the woman she was being scammed.Westlake police officers and detectives then began to “scam the scammers.” Officers said they used the victim’s electronics to agree to another gold pick-up and drew the fake agents in with fake receipts and photos of realistic-looking imitation gold. On March 25, the scammers showed back up at the victim’s home and collected the fake gold, but detectives and drones were watching.
