/ Reporter Lee Jun-heon As U.S. President Donald Trump visits Korea on October 29 to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Gyeongju, local labor, civic, and human rights groups have announced large-scale “anti-Trump” demonstrations. The Organizing Committee for the International People’s Response to APEC 2025, a coalition of 37 organizations, said on October 28 that “APEC cannot resolve the global hegemonic economic order led by Trump; instead, it reinforces it.” The group added, “We will stand together in opposition to APEC and Trump, and take action to strengthen international solidarity among the world’s working people.” The committee denounced the Trump administration’s demands, including US$350 billion in Korean investment in the U.S., trade and tariff negotiations, and higher defense cost-sharing, as a form of “American economic exploitation.” It said, “Korea is not exempt from Trump’s unilateral and hegemonic plunder. Now is the time to fight back against humiliating relations with the U.S. and its economic exploitation.” The group has designated October 29 to November 1 as a period of intensified protests, with rallies planned in both Gyeongju and Seoul. On the 29th, the day of Trump’s arrival, a press conference condemning him will be held near the APEC venue at Guhwanggyo Intersection in Gyeongju. A spokesperson for the committee said, “Speakers will address issues such as Trump’s tariff bombs, the detention of Korean workers in Georgia, and his massive investment demands, all examples of U.S. unilateralism and hegemonic behavior.” The event will also feature a performance satirizing Trump’s controversial remarks. On the 30th, an “International People’s Conference and Solidarity Exchange Night” will be held in Seoul under the theme “Oppose APEC 2025! Oppose Trump!” On the 31st, civic groups will gather in central Seoul for a press briefing on Trump’s visit, followed by a large-scale protest condemning tariffs, economic exploitation, the APEC Summit, and what they call Korea’s “subservient” relationship with the U.S. Finally, on November 1, activists plan a press conference and an International People’s March in Gyeongju to wrap up their series of protests.
