Gyeongju | Kim Chang-gil, Reporter The Asia·Pacific region’s largest economic forum, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Chief Executive Officers Summit, officially kicked off on the 29th. Chey Tae-won, chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and chair of the APEC CEO Summit, said at the opening ceremony held at Hwarang Hall of the Gyeongju Arts Center in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, “Some people ask me, ‘Why host the CEO Summit in Gyeongju?’ ‘Why not Seoul?’” He added, “Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom; what stands out most in history is precisely Gyeongju.” He went on to say, “Gyeongju was the center of science and culturein other words, Asia’s Silicon Valley a thousand years ago,” eliciting laughter from the audience. Chey continued, “The global economy faces countless challenges,” adding, “Amid changes spanning supply-chain issues, digital transformation, and responses to the climate crisis, this year’s APEC theme is to find solutions to these tasks.” Following Chey’s opening remarks, President Lee Jae-myung took the stage for a special address. Referring to the 2005 APEC Leaders’ Meeting held in Busan, he voiced concern over the recent spread of protectionism. He said, “The external environment surrounding APEC today in 2025 is very different from back then,” and added, “With protectionism and nation-first policies rearing their heads in an era where immediate survival feels urgent, talk of cooperation, co-prosperity, and inclusive growth may sound hollow.” He went on to stress that, paradoxically, the need for solidarity grows in times of crisis, saying APEC’s role as a platform for solidarity shines even brighter. He said, “There’s a saying that a friend in need is a friend indeed,” adding, “APEC has, at every moment of crisis, joined hands in solidarity, proving that mutual trust is the shortcut to shared prosperity.” He continued, “Twenty years ago, Korea marshaled a united resolve at APEC; now, as APEC chair again, we aim to lead the path of multilateral cooperation to confront crises.” A large number of top executives from major companies at home and abroad attended the opening ceremony. From Korean companies: Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics; Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor; Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG; Shin Dong-bin, Chairman of Lotte; Jang In-hwa, Chairman of POSCO Holdings; Chung Ki-sun, Chairman of HD Hyundai; Huh Tae-soo, Chairman of GS; Chung Yong-jin, Chairman of Shinsegae; and Park Jeong-won, Chairman of Doosan, among others. Marking its 30th year, this year’s APEC CEO Summit is the largest ever in terms of sessions, speakers, and the number of participating leaders. Some 1,700 businesspeople from 21 economies across the Asia·Pacific are attending, with the program extended by a day to run for four days and three nights. This afternoon, when the main sessions begin, U.S. President Donald Trump and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will deliver special addresses. Afterwards, nine sessions will be held featuring official speakers including RM of BTS.
