On February 25 last year, a trial court sentenced Kumar to life imprisonment in a case connected to the alleged incitement of violence during the riots.
Delhis Rouse Avenue Court on Thursday acquitted former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in a case linked to alleged incitement of violence in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas of Delhi during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The court had discharged Sajjan Kumar from the offence of murder, news agency ANI reported. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh delivered a brief oral order acquitting Kumar. A detailed order is still awaited. Charges against Sajjan KumarIn August 2023, the court framed charges against Kumar for rioting and promoting enmity, but dropped the charges of murder and criminal conspiracy.Earlier, in February 2015, a special investigation team registered two FIRs against Kumar based on complaints of violence during the 1984 riots in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas. The first FIR pertained to the Janakpuri incident in which two men, Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh, were killed on November 1, 1984.The second FIR related to the Vikaspuri case, where Gurcharan Singh was allegedly set on fire on November 2, 1984.Sajjan Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonmentKumar, who is currently incarcerated, was awarded life imprisonment by a trial court on February 25 last year in a case related to the deaths of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh, who were killed on November 1, 1984, in the Saraswati Vihar area. The court observed that although the killing of “two innocent persons” was a grave offence, it did not meet the threshold of the “rarest of rare” category required to impose the death penalty. The court further noted that the incident formed part of the same sequence of events and could be treated as a continuation of the case in which Kumar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court on December 17, 2018.The High Court had found him guilty of being responsible for the deaths of five individuals during a comparable outbreak of rioting in the Palam Colony area after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.According to the Nanavati Commission report, which was constituted to investigate the violence and its aftermath, a total of 587 FIRs were registered in Delhi in relation to the riots that claimed 2,733 lives. Of these cases, approximately 240 were closed by the police as “untraced,” while about 250 resulted in acquittals.Only 28 of the 587 FIRs ultimately led to convictions, with around 400 individuals being found guilty. Nearly 50 people, including a former Member of Parliament, were convicted on charges of murder.
