Dozens of chihuahuas were found living in deplorable conditions in a Pennsylvania home. Authorities responded to a domestic dispute call and discovered the home to be overrun with feces and urine. A majority of the rescued dogs were taken to the Adams County SPCA for care, while one dog was sadly euthanized due to its injuries. The homeowner, Ray Derita, faces multiple charges.
Dozens of chihuahuas were rescued from a home described by troopers as being 'covered with dog feces and urine.' State Police in Gettysburg responded to a call at the residence of Stephanie and Ray Derita on February 1st around 1:16 p.m. for a domestic dispute. Upon arrival, troopers found no physical altercation between the couple but were concerned about the living conditions of their 15-year-old child.
Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) stated that the home was filled with feces and urine to the point where it was 'impossible to step anywhere without stepping in feces.' The only seemingly clean area was Stephanie Derita's room, according to the child's account to the trooper. Because of these conditions, it was determined that the house was unsanitary for both the child and the dogs residing there. After contacting the Adams County SPCA for assistance, organization members discovered a total of 63 chihuahuas living in the home. Services were immediately arranged to clean the residence. Sadly, one of the rescued dogs, a male chihuahua, had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries. The majority of the seized dogs were placed in the care of the Adams County SPCA. Ray Derita is currently facing charges including prohibited possession of a firearm, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated cruelty to animals, and neglect of animals. CBS 21 has reached out to the Adams County SPCA for further information and is awaiting a response.
