“The handbags with the jeweled dragon clasps from fall 2004 are really calling to me right now,” says one vintage enthusiast on the Tom Ford-era Gucci pieces you need to invest in now

The collection I somehow always end up coming back to is spring 1997. The head-to-toe look envisioned by Tom [Ford] and Carine Roitfeld—the meanest, sharpest tailoring, the skinniest pants slashed open at the foot to show off stilettos that were cuffed to the ankle, the slinkiest silk or velvet slip dresses barely held onto the body by a chain strap, the… all worn by gorgeous, sweaty, smoky-eyed models who looked like they’d lived faster in one night than you could in your entire life.

I think you also need to know what you want the piece or pieces for. Unless you’re building an archive or totally wardrobing yourself, skip the commercial spin-offs and showroom pieces and go straight for the runway/ad campaign stuff. Also, know your seasons! I’ve seen so many pieces from after Tom’s tenure being marketed as Tom Ford for Gucci on resale sites. And don’t hesitate. If you love it, buy it.

Adwoa Aboah wearing a sequined gown sourced by William Vintage from Ford’s final fall 2004 collection for Gucci in 2019.Fall 1996. The holy grail of them all, my favorite collection. A confluence of everything: gorgeous clothes, styling, music—even the hair and make-up was perfection. Sex, but very sophisticated. Kate Moss opened the show wearing the most perfectly cut suit, her shirt unbuttoned to the waist.

Breakingviews - New Gucci designer has big sneakers to fillBreakingviews - New Gucci designer has big sneakers to fillGucci’s new creative head Sabato De Sarno is stepping onto a wobbly catwalk. François-Henri Pinault’s conglomerate Kering on Saturday picked the 39-year-old from smaller fashion house Valentino to lead its biggest brand and succeed star designer Alessandro Michele, who left abruptly in November. Michele’s daring designs, which he applied lavishly on anything from shirts to sneakers, helped Gucci sales shoot up to nearly 10 billion euros in 2019. But at around 10.5 billion euros in 2022, Gucci sales are expected to have risen only 10% since then. Meanwhile sales at LVMH-owned rival Louis Vuitton rose almost 60% to about 20 billion euros and nearly trebled at now similarly-sized Dior, according to Breakingviews calculations on estimates from Jefferies and HSBC.
