The 49ers (2-2) welcome safety Jimmie Ward back to their top-ranked defense today against Baker Mayfield and the host Carolina Panthers (1-3).

CHARLOTTE — With the 49ers activating six wide receivers for today’s game against the Panthers, their only surprising player they opted to keep out is running back Marlon Mack.

Jeff Wilson Jr. remains in line to handle the brunt of the backfield’s carries, although the Niners have spelled him mostly with Deebo Samuel, a South Carolina native making his Charlotte debut. Coleman was elevated from the practice squad for a second straight week, although the 49ers used him only one snap in Monday night’s 24-9 win over the reigning Super Bowl-champion Rams.

The six wide receivers suiting up: Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, Ray-Ray McCloud, Danny Gray and special-teams ace Malik Turner. If Baker Mayfield improves on his 31st-ranked completion percentage today, it’ll come against a top-ranked 49ers defense that is juggling its starting lineup for the Panthers.
