The 49ers kick off a two-game road swing through the NFC South in Charlotte, taking on the Carolina Panthers.
The story of the season, though, should be the 49ers defense. San Francisco has only allowed 46 points through four games and even tallied a touchdown of their own against the Rams, when emerging standout safety Talanoa Hufanga returned an interception for a touchdown. Even as the offense has struggled, the defense looks like it will keep the 49ers in games all season long.
Carolina was a team that could have traded for Garoppolo this offseason. Instead, they acquired Baker Mayfield from Cleveland. It hasn’t gone all that well so far, and both Mayfield and head coach Matt Rhule are facing some intense criticism for the Panthers’ 1-3 start.
