For the 2022 cycle, the team is spending big money on behalf of City Councilman Anthony Becker, who is challenging incumbent Mayor Lisa Gillmor. But Gillmor apparently has a rich and powerful ally of her own: Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
Ross is the chairman of real estate development firm Related Companies, and its subsidiary Related Santa Clara is set to break ground on an $8 billion development later this year. the endeavor — which will see the construction of offices, housing, restaurants and more — as “Silicon Valley’s biggest private mixed-use project.”that two Related subsidiaries — Related Santa Clara and Related California Residential — combined to spend $100,000 on a pro-Gillmor committee this week. That contrasts with the $368,000 the 49ers spent on a pro-Becker committee last week.
The race could get more expensive as we get closer to Election Day, especially when one considers the past donation records of York and Ross. In 2020, York spent $3 million on a group supporting the campaigns of four Santa Clara City Council candidates,
