The Trey Lance era with the San Francisco 49ers got off to a soggy start Sunday as a weather system moved into the Chicago area bringing with it drenching downpours and a flash flood warning.
The wet conditions at Soldier Field will keep 49ers star tight end George Kittle, who is nursing a groin injury, on the sidelines. The soggy turf will also make for less than favorable conditions for Lance's first start of the season.
The Bears and Niners will be playing on new turf after Bermuda grass was installed this week instead of the usual Kentucky bluegrass. The 49ers have been building for this since they traded three first-round picks to draft Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021 out of FCS school North Dakota State.
"Just getting into my routine," Lance said."It's been awesome this week and a little bit of last week just to be able to kind of nail that down for this week."
