2 dead, 4 injured after wrong-way crash on NB I-17

Two people died and four people were injured after a four-vehicle collision involving a wrong-way driver on northbound Interstate 17 near Table Mesa Road early Monday.

Just before 4 a.m., a driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes crashed with other vehicles traveling northbound, according to Department of Public Safety spokesperson Sgt. Jesus Gastelum. The wrong-way driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was unconscious and was taken to a hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

There were three people in one of the other vehicles. Two of them died and one was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to Gastelum. The drivers of the other two vehicles had injuries that were not life-threatening.Northbound I-17 was closed at milepost 236 and northbound traffic was being diverted back south at Table Mesa Road. There was no estimated reopening time, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. All traffic is exiting at Table Mesa Road.
