BREAKING UPDATE: I-17 northbound was closed due to a fatal crash involving four vehicles near New River. The three who died have been identified as students of Grand Canyon University.
Interstate 17 northbound was closed at milepost 236 north of New River due to a crash involving four vehicles and three deaths.
Just before 4 a.m. on Oct. 10, a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with vehicles traveling northbound. "The driver, and sole occupant, of the wrong way vehicle was unconscious and transported to a hospital," stated Sgt. Jesus Gastelum of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. "The single occupant drivers of the other two involved vehicles sustained non-life-threatening injuries."The highway reopened at 11:30 a.m. at milepost 236 north of New River. During the investigation, I-17 was blocked at Table Mesa Road.
The students, identified by GCU as 18-year-old Abriauna Hoffman, 19-year-old Hunter Balberdi, and 18-year-old Magdalyn "Maggie" Ogden, were all freshmen and dorm roommates. Two of the three were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third died at the hospital. "As the GCU family joins together to mourn the tragic loss of these students, we ask that you keep their families and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and know that God is always there for us," read a portion of the statement.Tune in to FOX 10 Phoenix for the latest news:
