Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Sunday that 300 TSA agents have quit their jobs, and the number of TSA agent “callouts” have doubled from what they were before the shutdown. He said that agents have already missed a partial payment and a full payment, adding the employees are those who “don’t make a lot of money.
” Duffy blamed political gridlock for the stalemate over funding the Department of Homeland Security, which includes TSA. Funding for DHS lapsed in mid-February amid controversy in Congress over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.George Borek is a TSA officer from Atlanta and a labor representative for a federal employee union. He told CNN a lot of the public doesn’t realize TSA agents are working without pay right now because other government agencies aren’t affected by the shutdown. “People are terrified. People are scared. They don’t know what tomorrow is going to bring. A lot of them are trying… they’re having mental breakdowns. They’re having like, ‘Where am I gonna get a meal?’” Borek said.
