The 2020 ForbesUnder30 Consumer Technology stars are leaders who are changing the way we live for the better

Facebook and Instagram may dominate social media, but many Under 30 winners are challenging their dominance and finding new ways to connect. Brothers Alex and Austen Ma created TTYL, which lets people chat if they have headphones like AirPods connected. Twenty founder Diesel Peltz, 26, is helping people in the same location meet up, while Wildfire cofounders Hriday Kemburu , Jay Patel and Vinay Ramesh are helping students stay safe and in the know about what’s happening on campus around them.

This year’s Consumer Tech call-out is Devon Townsend, 29, cofounder of Cameo. A former Microsoft employee turned Vine star, he decided to build an app that lets people buy custom video messages from celebrities. One of its earliest customers sent them a video of their daughter literally crying after watching the Cameo video. “It’s the most powerful video we’d ever seen,” Townsend says. “This is really cool validation that this is something that could work.

Technology is also changing the way we shop. Fetch Rewards cofounders Tyler Kennedy, 28, and Wes Schroll, 26, realized grocery store loyalty programs only rewarded people for going to the same physical store over and over again. Wisconsin-based Fetch Rewards instead gives people points based on what brands they buy, no matter where they shop. Tyler Faux, 29, of Supergreat is also changing how beauty lovers find the best products thanks to his review website.

Some list winners aren’t founders of companies but entrepreneurs within larger companies, from Uber to Google to Instagram. For example, Twitter product manager, Jesar Shah, 25, helped create Twitter Lite , launched Bookmarks in 2018 and most recently helped lead the redesign efforts. At Uber, Nikhil Goel, 28, moved from the emerging markets team to become a cofounder of Uber Elevate and head of product, running the team that oversees its Uber Copter service.

This year’s winners show that consumer tech is continuing to innovate every part of our life with the goal of making it better than ever.I’m a San Francisco-based staff writer for Forbes with a focus on Uber, the sharing economy, and startups. 30-Year-Old Factors In Birthday Money30-Year-Old Factors In Birthday MoneyMEDFORD, OR—While calculating his budget Wednesday, Ben Hollis, a 30-year-old man, carefully factored in the birthday money he’ll receive next month as a way to offset a number of expenses, sources confirmed. “I usually get $100 from my parents, and then there’s a $25 check from Aunt Darlene, and another $25 from Aunt Lorrie, so that’s groceries right there,” said the full-grown adult, who then made a mental note to call his grandparents later that week to talk about his birthday plans so that they’ll remember to send their customary $10 bills. “If Uncle Howie sends something, I might only have to pay half of my phone bill. Then I can get the new Tomb Raider game.” Hollis reportedly reassured himself that if the value of the anticipated gifts falls short of expectation, he can spend his own money on his gym membership, but he’d prefer not to.
