A 3-month-old baby was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Riverside that left a family trapped on Sunday night, according to California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened just after 7:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the 215 Freeway near Eucalyptus Avenue.According to CHP, a Honda Civic was stopped in the roadway due to traffic before the chain-reaction crash.
A Nissan slammed into the back of the Honda, and a Toyota slammed into the back of the Nissan, though CHP noted that the sequence of events is currently unknown. The family inside the Nissan sustained minor to major injuries. Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to rescue the family, and there was also a dog in one of the cars. A 3-month-old infant in a car seat in the back of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the hospital. Video from the scene shows two car seats that were removed from the Nissan, and bystanders described seeing two children and two adults in the vehicle."We all tried to pry the doors open. They were pulling sporadically, and I decided to say, 'One, two, three,' and we would pull... Obviously, we are just human. We are not machines, so we could not get it open. We urgently tried to get to the children in the back, but we were not successful. I tried keeping the parents calm and telling them that I was there, trying to get any information that I could," said bystander Cianca C. The driver of the Toyota sustained moderate injuries, and the occupants of the Honda sustained minor injuries, CHP said. The northbound lanes of the 215 Freeway were closed for hours on Sunday night as authorities investigated the crash. Anyone who may have seen the incident is encouraged to call the California Highway Patrol Accident Investigation Unit at 324-7210.
