Two people died early Sunday when a speeding SUV went off a freeway interchange in South County and landed in the Sweetwater River, authorities said. Officers from the California Highway Patrol and Chula Vista Police Department responded to the crash shortly before 1 a.
m. after a witness reported seeing a solo vehicle heading westbound on state Route 54 transitioning to southbound Interstate 5 drive off the bridge with sparks flying, according to the CHP. The car landed in the water below. Route 54 is a boundary line between National City and Chula Vista. A good Samaritan and a law enforcement officer made unsuccessful attempts to rescue the driver and passenger from the submerged vehicle, the CHP said. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene and the interchange was closed for several hours.
