Amid an uncertain future, Gov. Mike Dunleavy, R-Alaska, and Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler promoted loans to residents and businesses impacted by former Typhoon Halong after meeting with evacuees inside the Alaska Airlines Center on Wednesday.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Amid an uncertain future, Gov. Mike Dunleavy, R- Alaska , and Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler promoted loans to residents and businesses impacted by“We’re working hard,” Dunleavy said.

“We’re working hard with the federal government, all of our state agencies, University of Alaska, all of the corporations, anyone that’s associated with emergency response on this. And it’s a lot of people from all over the country that’s helping Alaska.” The SBA offers three types of loans that are not due for payment and will not accrue interest for a year.Home disaster loans are for homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, an SBA fact sheet distributed at the press conference reads. Homeowners and renters can apply for up to $100,000 to replace or repair personal property, or up to $500,000 to replace or repair their “primary residence,” a different SBA release said. Without available credit, the interest rate is 3%. In that same release, the SBA adds that personal property from subsistence camps “used to transit between a primary residence and subsistence camps,” are eligible for loans. “ allows funding and lending to take place for things like hunting, ATVs, preservation, food preservation devices, hunting knives, and other boats and other things needed for subsistence camps,” Loeffler said. “We’re going to continue to respond to the unique needs of the terrain, of the people, of this culture, and make sure that the funding meets the moment.”The second type of loan, Economic Injury Disaster Loans, are eligible for small businesses and “most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster,” the SBA fact sheet reads. The final loan type are business physical disaster loans, meant to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by businesses. Businesses of all sizes and private nonprofits are also eligible. A maximum of $2,000,000 in assistance is possible with the same interest rates as EIDL. “This is one example of how the Trump administration is not leaving anyone behind, even amid the Senate Democrats shutdown of the federal government,” Loeffler said. When asked if the governor thought the shutdown played a role in the response to Halong, he replied “not from my perspective.”Dunleavy reaffirmed his commitment to having villages affected by the storm able to be returned to within two weeks, some of which state numbers report are upwards of 90% destroyed. “We’re going to keep going and working on it as long as we possibly can. I think we can get a lot of these villages up and running,” Dunleavy said, without directly saying if two weeks is possible.Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management“Ongoing power outages remain in Akiak, Kipnuk, Kotlik, Kwigillingok, and Mekoryuk,” the press release reads. “While critical potable water and wastewater infrastructure failures persist in multiple communities, recovery teams are restoring water service, testing for contamination, and repairing fuel lines, wells, and damaged roads.”However, Dunleavy said a conversation still needs to be had. “All of the efforts, all of the community efforts right now, we’re doing, is for short term purposes only, long term plan is to relocate to higher ground,” said Darrel John, Kwigillingok School community advocate, to “The longer-term issues like relocation ... are going to be important. Good, important discussions, but priorities, most immediate right now, what would you say those are?” Sullivan said. Dunleavy echoed a similar sentiment when asked how the state would handle the village’s wish to relocate. “That’s going to be a discussion that’s going to probably unfurl this winter and spring, and may take some time to really get resolution as to what that ends up where that ends up going.”‘Playing truth or dare’: State troopers looking for armed, dangerous man in Fairbanks accused of torturing victimGovernment shutdown threatens Alaska Natives
