Fire officials say a smoke inhalation drug likely saved the life of a FDNY firefighter who fell unconscious and stopped breathing while battling a house fire in the Bronx on Friday.
Three firefighters were injured, two seriously, after battling a 2-alarm house fire in the Bronx on Friday. The fire broke out at a home in the Clason Point section on White Plains Road at around 3 p.m., authorities say.Video showed black smoke billowing from the home as the fire.John Hodgens, the FDNY 's chief of department, said one of the firefighters was inside the house operating a hose when he began having problems breathing.
Emergency medical workers also gave the firefighter the drug hydroxocobalamin, which combats the effects of cyanide poisoning that can result from smoke inhalation. Kavanagh said officials believe the drug saved the firefighter's life. He and another firefighter were in stable condition at a hospital, while the third firefighter was released from a hospital.By 5 p.m., the FDNY had brought the fire mostly under control. A third firefighter reportedly suffered minor injuries.
