A moderate earthquake rattled the remote red rock region of Southern Utah, sending tremors across a widespread area. The USGS recorded the quake's epicenter near Escalante and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, with the 'Cosmic Ashtray' sandstone formation identified as a nearby landmark.
A magnitude 3.5 earthquake rumbled through the remote red rock country of Southern Utah early Tuesday morning, sending seismic waves rippling across a wide swathe of the region. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 17 miles southeast of Escalante and 20 miles northwest of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
According to the US Geological Survey's (USGS) shake map, the nearest notable landmark to the epicenter was the 'Cosmic Ashtray,' a unique sandstone formation characterized by a large boulder and filled with vibrant orange sand. It's situated roughly eight miles from the nearest road, as indicated by public map resources. As of the time this report was published, the USGS had received four responses on its 'Did You Feel It?' section. Three individuals, residing in the closest towns of Escalante and Boulder, reported experiencing weak shaking but noted no damage. The earthquake's radiating waves registered a 3.0 event in Escalante and Boulder, while a 2.5 event was recorded at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Seismic activity was even detected near Cedar City, Zion National Park, Monument Valley, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park. 'Earthquakes with a magnitude of about 2.0 or less are generally referred to as microearthquakes,' according to the USGS. 'These are not commonly felt by people and are typically recorded only on local seismographs.' The geological survey states that earthquakes are generally not perceptible to humans until they reach a magnitude of about 3.0, which is often likened to the sensation of a large truck passing by
