A strong earthquake hit El Salvador on Sunday, causing no major damage or injuries.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake shook El Salvador on Sunday without reporting any immediate damage or injuries, authorities reported. The United States Geological Survey indicated that the strong tremor occurred at 11:18 am local time, 50 kilometers southwest of the capital, on the coast of La Paz in the Pacific Ocean, at a depth of 49.5 kilometers.

President Nayib Bukele reported on his X account, formerly Twitter, that after the strong earthquake, they have been receiving reports from all sectors of the country and that “apparently, there are no lives lost or injured persons, and there are also no reports of significant material damage. We will continue to monitor the situation. God protects El Salvador”. The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Fernando López, said on his X account that “there is no tsunami threat to El Salvador”. “Everything shook, I thought the houses were going to fall, we all went out to the streets,” Ernesto Sánchez, who lives in a popular district of Santa Tecla, on the west outskirts of the capital, told The Associated Press. Radio YSKL, which covers the entire country, reported that there were interruptions in telephone service, but there was no information about fatalities or injuries. Salvamento Command reported that they are monitoring different locations in the country after the powerful earthquake, but that they have no reports of fatalities or injuries. They added that they have only provided attention to people who presented nervous breakdowns in one of the evangelical Christian churches in the capital. The Environmental Observatory reported that after the powerful earthquake, 27 aftershocks have been registered, of which 11 have been felt by the population and clarified that this activity is due to the subduction process between the Cocos and Caribbean plates and that these earthquakes do not represent a tsunami threat to the Salvadoran coast
