The sad fallout of a hard year, from the last goodbye of the city’s No. 1 taquería to a flood of brewery closings and the loss of 2 Italian sister restaurants.
The last week of business at Lala ’s Gordita ’s found Steven Pizzini in the window as always, taking orders over the phone and in person at the same time. Two guys in the long line behind me at this Tex-Mex walk-up stand said they’d never been, and they wanted to try it before it closed for good the day before Christmas Eve. Gordita s, puffy tacos, bean cups and guacamole cups, all made with masa ground right there in the shop with a molino that’s been in Pizzini’s family for generations.
